To Christmas Bonus or to Not Christmas Bonus?
What do you do? As a manager, I would bring treats in for my staff for the week leading up to Christmas. Sales staff on the retail floor typically don’t get recognized at this time of year, but I always wanted to do things differently.
I remember the kindness of my leaders, but also have a profound distaste for those who made less of an effort. The worst Christmas bonus was a 10% off coupon, the same piece of paper that every customer who had a store credit card received with their October and November statements. The best was a $100 Mastercard gift card that wasn’t attached to any specific store. If I wanted to buy groceries with it, I could. If we wanted to have a nice dinner date, that was our choice.
When you give a holiday bonus, be mindful of who is receiving the gift. Is it something you would want someone to give you?
Whatever you do, DO NOT give my book, Spent, as a Christmas Bonus. That’s a boring present, and it might result in some employees realizing it’s time to move on to a different company. Consider buying a bunch for your next company meeting (especially if you lead a retail team).
