Oh, the vibe at Mister M…this is not your rich boss’ supper club.
My husband and I went as Hugo Xavier’s guests (the assistant manager). I did not recognize the place as the former State & Main. From the minute we walked in the door, we felt elevated and welcomed. The last supper club I went to I was left feeling like trailer trash who bought a new dress at Walmart instead of the thrift shop.
At Mister M, I felt like I belonged.
TLDR; This is a loud place with decent food, but check out their theme nights.
Now, let’s get to the food. Nice drink menu with some interesting mixes. I ordered the Hemingway Daquiri which WAS tart and refreshing as the menu promised. My husband had the old-fashioned and was impressed with the clear cube and the M stamp.
Appetizers
Buratta salad: This fell flat for me on the first taste, but the buratta wins for being super creamy. After I had a few bites of one of our mains, the buratta suddenly burst with flavour. My husband loved the subtle taste at the start. 7/10
Lobster roll: the bread is divine and sweet and goes well with the lobster. I would have preferred more pronounced dill flavour. 7/10
Entrees
12oz Ribeye: Not gonna lie, the description of coffee crusted steak intrigued me. This was 100% a winner. Perfectly cooked and executed. The chimichurri sauce was the best I’ve had. At first taste, I thought I picked up basil, which confused me, since traditional chimichurri has parsley. It took a second taste to figure out the parsley and cilantro were perfectly balanced and brought out the best in each other (like me and my husband ). 10/10
Fettuccine: The first thing I noticed was the sauce broke (see photo for separation of butter and cream). However, this did not impact the taste at all. The mushroom flavour is strong, but not overwhelming. The pasta is not fresh, which is fine, but it did feel a little stiff in my mouth (get your mind out of the gutter). Fresh pasta would pair better with the truffle and lemon cream sauce. 8/10 for flavour.
Dessert
This is where Mister M knocked it out of the park. The Tres leches sponge cake was so delicate and tasty. I’d come back just for this. 9/10
We also ordered the honey semifreddo. Slight lemon flavor and caramel sauce. Excellent creaminess to the semifreddo, closer to ice cream than mousse. My husband does not like citrus flavour in his food, but he fully enjoyed this. 8/10
The night we went, they had a live band. It can get loud, but the band took enough breaks that we were able to talk without yelling. The decor is beautiful (those chandeliers ) and it’s a comfortable space to eat and enjoy an evening.
Bonus: if the weather cooperates (which it did), it’s lovely to walk down Stephen Ave afterward.
We will definitely be back.
